What Is a Boarding Pass? Ticket and Check-in Explained
A boarding pass is the document an airline issues through check-in for boarding a particular flight. Further identity, security or travel-document checks may still be required. It identifies the passenger and flight, with details such as boarding time, gate and seat where assigned. A ticket or booking itinerary is a different document.

A completed example
| Label on a boarding pass | Teaching example | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Passenger | EXAMPLE / TRAVELLER | Compare with your own travel documents on the actual pass |
| Flight and date | EXAMPLE FLIGHT · 12 September 2026 | Identify the particular flight, not the whole holiday |
| From / to | Example origin → Example destination | Check the airport for this flight segment |
| Boarding / departure | 09:20 / 10:00 | Boarding time and scheduled departure are different |
| Gate / seat | Illustration only | Use the current assignment shown by the airline |
| Machine-readable area | Intentionally omitted | A real issuer’s code is not something to recreate from this example |
This table is an explanation, not an airline document. It contains no usable booking reference, airline identity or machine-readable code.
Boarding pass, ticket and itinerary
| Document | What it normally describes | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Ticket / e-ticket | A ticketed booking and its flight or fare details | That check-in is complete or a gate has been assigned |
| Itinerary | The planned sequence of flights or other travel | That each reservation is ticketed or that the passenger has boarded |
| Boarding pass | The checked-in passenger and particular flight segment | That every other travel, security or immigration requirement is complete |
| Check-in confirmation slip | A completed online step with further airline action required | Permission to treat the slip as a boarding pass |
Get the official pass: first check-in or retrieve an existing one
- Identify the operating airline from your booking. Use its official website or app and read the check-in instructions for your route.
- If you have not checked in, complete the airline’s eligible check-in process there. Enter booking and identity details only with the airline or an authorized service.
- If you already checked in, look in the airline’s booking or trip area and the registered email for the issued pass.
- Read the document heading. If it is a confirmation slip or asks for counter verification, follow that instruction.
- If no pass is available or departure is approaching, contact the airline or its airport staff. Do not wait for a third-party document maker to supply one.
Why a confirmation slip may be the expected result
Air India’s public FAQ distinguishes a digital boarding pass for domestic travel from a confirmation slip that some international or connecting passengers may receive. It directs passengers with a slip to the airport counter for verification. Its missing-pass guidance also points to email, booking status and airline assistance.
Check-in windows, mobile-pass availability and required airport checks depend on the airline, route and passenger circumstances. Follow the instructions attached to your own booking and check-in result.
Check the actual pass before travel
If you have multiple flight segments, identify which pass relates to each one. A pass for the first flight should not be assumed to cover the onward segment. Resolve a mismatch with the airline rather than editing the document.
- Compare the passenger and flight details with the booking and identification.
- Confirm the departure airport and date, especially for an overnight itinerary.
- Keep the airline-issued pass accessible in the form accepted for your journey.
- Check current gate and boarding updates at the airport.
- Keep booking references and barcode images private when sharing travel photos.
If you need travel evidence after the journey
Ask the airline what original travel record it can provide and ask the employer or reviewer which evidence it accepts. An e-ticket records a booking; an expense summary records your own explanation. Neither should be relabelled as a missing boarding pass.
OnlineBiller’s sample travel documents are not connected to airline check-in and cannot retrieve a real boarding pass or prove that a flight was taken.
Common questions
Can I board with my flight ticket alone?
A ticket and boarding pass serve different stages. Follow your airline’s check-in and airport document instructions and obtain the airline-issued boarding pass required for your flight.
Do I always need to print the boarding pass?
No universal answer applies to every route. Check the airline and departure airport requirements for your journey; a digital pass may be available where accepted.
Why does my pass have no gate?
A gate may be assigned or updated later. Check the current airline and airport information rather than adding a gate to the saved pass yourself.
Can OnlineBiller retrieve my boarding pass from a PNR?
No. Use your operating airline’s official booking or check-in service with the details it requests. OnlineBiller cannot access airline bookings or issue a boarding pass.
